I recently found a new way “in” to my middle grade fantasy, and it’s working like gang busters. I must have tried at least a couple dozen unique beginnings. For me, beginnings are critical, as are knowing the endings.
Next time, however, I think I’ll plunge in first and worry about the first part later. This approach has been time consuming.
I read good advice from one of William Goldman’s books:
You always attack a movie scene as late as you possibly can. You always come into the scene at the last possible moment. Get on. The camera is relentless. Makes you keep running.
I tried to use the same logic for the beginning. We shall see!
